While genetics may play a significant role in determining whether you have clear skin, several other factors like your diet, your environment, and even your current skincare routine affect it too. Different skin types require different treatments, so choosing the skincare routine that’s suitable for you is important in providing your body the nutrients and care it needs to look and feel you best.
All skin types have certain advantages and disadvantages. We’ve broken down the 6 basic skin types to help you identify and care for your skin properly.
1)Oily/acne-prone/pimple-prone skin:
Oily skin is characterized by the overproduction of sebum, an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands responsible for lubricating the skin. Too much of this sebum can cause acne and too little can cause dry, cracked skin. The main characteristics of oily skin include:
●Shiny/greasy appearance and often has breakouts
●Visible and enlarged looking pores
●Less visible fine lines or wrinkles
●Make up may wear off easily
●Thick or coarse skin texture
2)Dry skin:
Dry skin generally produces less natural oils than other types of skin. The main characteristics of dry skin include:
●Skin feels tight and less elastic
●Often looks rough, flaky, or even scaly
●Shows fine lines
●Slow secretion of sebum
●May be hard to apply make up
3)Normal skin:
Possibly the most common skin type, it is characterized by the following:
●A clear appearance
●Feels neither tight or greasy
●Is soft and supple when touched
●Has good elasticity and moisture
●Has small, less visible pores
●Not sensitive to normal external stimulation
4)Combination skin:
Combination skin is a mix of skin types in different areas of your face, typically a combination of oiliness and drier patches. The main characteristics of combination skin include:
●Either oily or normal skin around the T-Zone area of the face. This includes the nose, forehead and chin
●Dry or normal skin around the U-Zone, which is the cheek, mouth and eyes
5)Sensitive skin:
Sensitive skin is a skin condition that can be found in any skin type. Those with sensitive skin must treat their skin with special care including treading carefully when using any new products on their skin. Sensitive skin needs special attention. Its main characteristics are:
●It is very sensitive to external stimulation such as heat, surfactants and exfoliation
●Gets irritated and may have allergic reactions and become red/swollen more easily than others without sensitive skin
●It’s often sensitive to certain chemicals in skin care products (e.g. fragrance and colorants)
6)Aging skin:
There are a range of different factors that cause our skin to age both as a result of the natural ageing process, environmental and lifestyle factors. UV rays are a major contributor to skin ageing. The main characteristics of aging skin include:
●Fine lines and wrinkles
●Dullness of skin
●Uneven skin tone
●Dry skin
●Blotchiness and age spots
●Rough skin texture
●Visible pores
A simple way to determine your skin type at home is to press a clean blotting paper against different areas of your face. Next step is to hold the sheet up to a light to see how much oil was absorbed: the more oil that was absorbed, the oilier you skin is likely to be.
-If the sheet soaked up an abundance of oil, you have oily skin
-If the sheet shows only a small amount of oil from your T-Zone, you have combination skin
-If the sheet only absorbs little oil, you have normal skin
-If the sheet absorbs no oil at all, you have dry skin
How to care for oily skin?
1)Regular exfoliation can help prevent clogged pores, resulting in fewer breakouts, and aids the skin’s ability to absorb skincare products.
2)Finding a lightweight, water-based moisturizer is crucial to avoid feeling greasy and congested.
3)If you wear makeup, make sure to cleanse your face thoroughly to remove makeup as any leftover residue can clog your pores and cause breakouts.
4)Avoid fried or spicy foods and do not stay up late.
How to care for dry skin?
1)Applying moisturizer to offer your complexion lasting hydration that leaves skin softer and smoother.
2)Using facial masks regularly can provide intense hydration for your skin and can boost your glow.
3)If you’ve noticed your skin feeling more sensitive or itchy than usual, it may be dehydrated. You can consider using products that are high in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties, such as ceramide, vitamin E and C, and licorice.
4)Make sure to use sunscreen during peak sun hours to prevent wrinkles or dark spots from developing.
5)A good face mist can be an additional moisturizing agent throughout the day.
How to care for normal skin?
1)Adjust your routine based on seasonal changes and specific skin needs. For instance, use lighter products in summer and focus on extra hydration during winter.
2)Make sure to use sunscreen during peak sun hours to prevent wrinkles or dark spots from developing.
How to care for combination skin?
1)Since combination skin typically has an oily T-zone, we recommend that you use water-based instead of oil-based makeup and skincare products.
2)Make sure to use sunscreen during peak sun hours to prevent wrinkles or dark spots from developing.
How to care for sensitive skin?
1)Before using a skincare product, perform a patch test on a small area of skin to see how your skin tolerates this product.
2)If you’ve noticed your skin feeling more sensitive or itchy than usual, you can consider using products that are high in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties, such as ceramide, vitamin E and C, and licorice.
How to care for aging skin?
1)Using vitamin A products like topical tretinoin can help reduce premature skin aging.
2)Eating foods rich in antioxidants like vegetables/fruits and consume less food high in sugar and oil.
3)Make sure to use sunscreen during peak sun hours to prevent wrinkles or dark spots from developing.
4)The constant squinting to read messages on your phone can cause premature lines on the forehead and crow’s feet at the out
